Claire and Victor Vasarely both began their careers at the Bortnyik Sándor Workshop, a school of commercial graphic design that, drawing on the pedagogical principles of the Bauhaus, equipped its students with modern graphic tools and knowledge. The two artists’ work continued to develop along parallel lines for many years, even during their years in exile in France: both took on a wide range of commercial graphic commissions, and their artistic development — including their shared move towards abstraction — shows numerous points in common. Claire’s turn towards textile and tapestry art opened new paths for Victor’s work as well, and her folk-art inspiration also left its mark on her husband’s art. Over the course of Victor Vasarely’s long career, several periods can be identified in which the influence of Claire’s way of seeing is reflected, whether subtly or openly. The talk explores these connections.
